Roxie's Story
Roxie is a beautiful 5-6 year old Doberman that arrived with the
last batch of rescues at the beginning of December. She was an ex-breeding
dog, who spent her entire life locked away in a crate, only coming out to give
birth to another litter of puppies for sale. When she was all used up, she
was dumped at the pound and would have been gassed to death if not for the nice
folks in Tennessee that rescue the dogs.
Unfortunately, she was heartworm positive, which means she has
to go through a rather unpleasant treatment. It was come up and be treated
here, or be treated there and spend the next 5 months wallowing in limbo in
Tennessee waiting for the spring-time rescue runs. We wanted her to come
up, so that she could begin her new life sooner. Before her treatment, she
ran and played with the other dogs, ate good food to get into shape, and got
lots of love.
She had her injection of Immiticide, which is the main adult
heartworm killing drug available, on December 27th.. It is an arsenic
based poison that is injected deep into the dog's lumbar area. She had a
rather negative reaction to it, and almost died at the vet, as a result of a
heart attack. Basinview Animal Hospital did their best and set Roxie on
the road to recovery, despite a set back and errors at a local emergency clinic.
We REALLY appreciate the care that she received at Basinview!
Unfortunately, Roxie has to be on heart medication for the next
few months, and has to have a few more vet check ups. She also has to be
under strict bed/kennel rest for 6 weeks, which needless to say, is quite boring
for her. That is to make sure she doesn't release dead worms throughout
her heart, and to let her recover from her heart attack. She has the best
disposition, always full of kisses and appreciating every pet. She loves
other dogs, and before her treatment, she was playing all day long. If the
heartworm was left untreated, she would have died. At any rate, all
of this vet attention and medication cost a lot of money. We are looking
to raise funds to sponsor beautiful Roxie so that we can get her fixed up and
into a home as soon as we can. If you would like to donate, there are a
number of ways... you can use paypal, send us a cheque or cash, or email money
transfer to
pawsacrossborders@gmail.com
We have already spent 850 dollars, and will have to spend
several hundred more in the next few months. Anything that you can offer
is appreciated by us and Miss Roxie. Roxie would be happy to thank you
with kisses! Roxie will hopefully be available for adoption by March.
UPDATE: Jan. 9, 2012
Roxie is making great progress. She has a normal
heartbeat, and she no longer has pulse deficits, which means her heart is
pumping blood properly. She is back up to full energy, which is a problem,
as she needs to stay settled for another 4 weeks! She is getting lots of
love and kisses, and is learning to love people so much. She is gaining
some much needed weight, which isn't hard right now when she isn't burning any
calories off. Thanks to everyone that has inquired about her and donated.
You guys make all the difference... thank you!
UPDATE: Jan. 15, 2012
Roxie is now allowed limited indoor playtime. She has been
wrestling with a min pin and just hanging out outside her kennel. That is
followed by an hour of cat watching. Heart still sounds normal after heart
medication dosage reduction. Fingers crossed!
UPDATE: Jan. 22, 20112
Roxie is now out of her kennel and hanging with us in the house
several hours a day. Walks start at the end of the week and doggy playtime
starts in a week! Yay for Roxie! Pics coming soon...

"Roxie"

"Roxie's new digs for the next 6 weeks:("

"Beautiful girl, just wanting to be touched"

"Bored out of her mind..."

"Roxie-vision! We got a video baby monitor so we didn't
have to disturb her every time we needed to check on her, and so we could
monitor her throughout the night."

"Janie"
Janie is a one-year old Am Staff/Bull Terrier mix. She is
vaccinated, de-wormed and spayed. Janie is a very playful, fun loving and
intelligent girl. Would be a great running companion. She is good in
her kennel and seems housebroken. She loves playing
with every toy she can find, and plays well with the other dogs. She
follows us around everywhere we go, and is constantly trying to understand us. While not
cat-aggressive, she is very interested, so a cat-free home would be best.
Loves every person she meets!

"Jake and Ginger (not for adoption)."

"Jake aka Jaker-snorts"
Jake is a 1.5 year old Black Lab X. He is neutered,
vaccinated and has been de-wormed. Jake is an energetic and very playful
boy. There isn't a mean bone in his body, as he is like a big puppy.
He is very affectionate. He will need an active home, as he is not content
to just lay around all day. Great with the other dogs and he loves
everybody. He is coming along with some of his training, and would excel
if his new family continued training with him.

"Winston"
Winston is a 1.5 year old Pug/Bassett Hound X. He is neutered,
vaccinated and has been de-wormed. He weighs 25-30lbs. Winston is a fun little
guy, who walks well on leash and is eager to learn more. He has a strong
personality, so he would do best in a home that will treat him more like a big
dog. He is good with the other dogs here. Good in the car and good in his
kennel.

"Ichabod"
Ichabod is a 2-year old, Red Tick Coonhound. He is
neutered, vaccinated and has been de-wormed. Ichabod is a wonderful dog.
He is good with other animals, big and small. He is loving, sweet and
generally obedient. When inside, he will just hop up on the bed and go to
sleep, and when out, will play and play. He really loves his walks.
He is fully housebroken. We just love his personality.
Ichabod has special needs. He has had one seizure, and
while the vet thinks it was epileptic, currently there is no need for medication
or anything really. If seizures start occurring frequently, there are very
inexpensive medications that control them. He is the perfect dog besides that.
Epilepsy is a manageable condition that does not result in a shortened life
expectancy. Icky is a truly wonderful dog and deserves a great home.

"Dolce"
Dolce is a 1.5 year old Rottie/Shepherd/Lab mix. She has
been spayed and vaccinated. Dolce is a very sweet girl and is very loyal
and loving. She has had some training off-lead. She is good with
other dogs. Dolce will make an excellent activity partner, as she is good
on lead and loves to bike or jog. Excellent in a crate.

"Hank"
Hank is a 3 year old pure bred, long haired German Shepherd who
is at heart a very loving soul in need of a dedicated and committed home. While
his current family loves him dearly, they are unable to give him the time and
attention he needs to be the great dog that he can be. Hank has been
under-socialized with both dogs and people. He also tends to be quite
protective of his property (house) and food. It is not recommended that Hank go
to a family with children or other pets. An ideal forever home for Hank would be
a person or persons who are very well
experienced working with dogs that need special attention, and perhaps German
Shepherds in particular. All that said, Hank is incredibly loyal, very loving
with his current owners, very smart and willing to learn. He is overall a
healthy boy, just needs lots of exercise to trim a bit of excess weight.

"Babe"
Babe is a 3 year old male cat. He has been neutered and all his vet check ups
are all up to date, including needles, etc. Babe took refuge in my garage when
he was approximately 7 months old. I was unable to find his owners... no one
came forward to claim the dear little thing. We originally named him Rusty but
his name is now Babe given to him by my mother. I took him to our vets and he
was completely looked over. I wasn’t sure if he was needled and de-wormed,
so we had this all done. Then, I decided to have him neutered and would
adopt him out. Since I have two dogs my mother agreed to look after him until
he was healed and in the meantime I would try and adopt him to a family. My
mother became attached she decided to keep him and from that day on they became
best buddies.
Unfortunately, Mom
can't live on her own anymore, and the cat needs to be place in a new home,
since her new home has dogs that aren't accepting of her.
Babe is so gentle and
really loves Mom, and I know that he would adapt well in another home. He loves
his treats and his wet food gravy. His greatest pleasure is playing hide and go
seek and war in his boxes. Babe is a complete indoor cat and is unbelievably
clean. Very independent and enjoys his nice long naps.
Please if anyone can
adopt this beautiful little boy you will not regret having him as part of your
family.
